Malcolm Todd is a relatively new kid on the block, but he quickly made his way up the ranks into the pop boy category with his 2024 debut album, Sweet Boy.
With 16 songs mostly compiled from the album's preceding EPs, Sweet Boy Pt 1 and Pt 2, Todd himself states on the opening track, "I hope you like my mixtape," but even within that, it's clear that Malcolm did not come to play games.
I did a full listen to the 45-minute album, and I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of it. My top three:
Thematically, the album covers romance, self-appreciation, and toxic love. Nothing too out of the ordinary here, which works to his advantage, especially on the production side. Everything is very flat and in your face in the mix which works alongside his soft, almost airy kind of vocals (and layering).
The mixtape is fully produced by Todd and Charlie Ziman, who appears to be a long-time collaborator (and likely close friend).
Malcolm does make good use of his guitar skills throughout the mixtape which adds some nice touches here and there.
If you're looking for something fresh but familiar, Malcolm Todd is worth your time. Sweet Boy is a confident debut that doesn't overstay its welcome.

And while you're in a music mood, I make music too. Check it out on the carousel to the left.
